Milly’s First Snow

February 13th, 2010 Zach Dotsey No comments

I woke up around 7:00 this morning.  Milly wasn’t fussing, but she was awake and I didn’t know what time it was, so I got on up.  Milly and I talked to Uncle Roy for a bit, and when I heard my parents I took Milly to see them.  Since Mom got in late last night she didn’t get to see Milly.  She didn’t get to see anyone, come to think of it.  I think I ended up going to sleep about 15 minutes before she and my dad got back to the house.

As I noticed last night, there was snow on the ground, probably a couple inches.  Amanda and I took Milly out to check it out, but she wasn’t really into it.  I got a few pictures and a little bit of video, but nothing monumental.

We mostly just hung around for a good part of the day.  Milly had her first taste of eggs, which she didn’t seem to mind too much.  I tried to install a printer on Uncle Roy’s laptop and drew and colored a picture of one of Jackson’s toys in Photoshop.  I’d shown him a little bit about how to use it yesterday, which he seemed to enjoy.  I wish they’d come out with a new MarioPaint, because the basics I learned playing with that were the basis for a lot of what I taught myself with Photoshop.

Duke hosted Maryland today.  Not only was it Coach K’s 1oooth game, and not only was it his birthday, but it was also a game to determine the #1 spot in the ACC.  The Terps were second but if they won they’d take Duke’s #1 spot.

The game started and Duke rebounded a Maryland attempt then Jon Scheyer made a three.  Then the power went out.  It came back on, but the satellite was taking forever to sync back up.  Then the power went out again.  Not only did it interrupt my game, but both laptops that were in use (mine, with Amanda on it, and Uncle Roy on his) died.  Dad and Josh were doing some bathroom work (they ended up pretty much completely stripping out the bathroom at the top of the stairs) and had to cut the power for some reason while they were draining the water.  Or something like that.

Once the power came back on the satellite took forever to reboot again, so I watched some of the game online until the TV was ready.

It was a great game.  Duke won by 21 and Brian Zoubek had his best game ever with 16 points and 17 rebounds!  Dude was a beast today.

In other basketball news, Carolina beat NC State in a game to determine who would reside in the cellar of the ACC.  Carolina, sadly, was able to stop their losing streak.  I watched UK beat Tennessee just a little bit ago.  It was tight until the end of the game when I guess the Wildcats decided they were tired of trading buckets.

We played some MarioKart for a bit then Amanda, Milly and I left just before 5:00.  The trip was pretty uneventful aside from the fact that I drove (even though I drove up as well, and we usually trade off duties) and Milly cried most of the last 15 miles or so of the trip.  She seemed to just be tired of being in the car.  She was also distracted while eating and didn’t go to bed too easily.

Amanda and I watched The Office and 30 Rock before she went to bed, then I watched an episode of Smallville.  The next one features the Justice Society.  I’d have gone ahead and watched it, but it’s a two hour one I think, and I remembered that Kentucky and Tennessee were playing.

The Revills, by the way, got two new dogs today.  They were just going to get one but they decided they liked two of them.  Lucy and Maxine are their names.  As you may recall, they recently lost two dogs.

Milly’s First Cold

October 20th, 2009 Zach Dotsey No comments

I am ready to officially say that Milly has her first cold.  She’s coughing a little and sneezes some, but mainly her nose is just really snotty.  There’s no fever though, and it doesn’t seem to be bothering her too much, although I think it’s hindered her ability to to go to sleep easily.  At small group tonight and later when we put her down back at home, she fussed a few times before nodding off.  She was fine with her paci in, but that requires her to breathe almost exclusively through her stuffy nose.

Other than that, Amanda and I watched the last Peasant Princess video for small group tonight then went to small group.  As seems to be our method, we socialized then had a decent, if often tangential, discussion then went off on other discussions and tangents during our prayer requests.  I thought it was good though.  I really like the dynamic of our group.

Amanda went to bed right after we got home, but I stayed up and watched three episodes of Smallville from the DVR.  I wasn’t really paying all that much attention though.

We turned the heat on today.  The nursery has been a little cold the last couple mornings, which may have contributed to Milly’s stuffy nose.

Chloe and Davis

April 2nd, 2009 Zach Dotsey No comments

I’m feeling slightly sick.  It’s just a scratchy throat and a slightly runny nose, so I don’t know if it’s an oncoming cold or if it’s some sort of allergy or what.  It’s been sneaking up the last few days.

Pretty uneventful day, overall.  When Amanda got home we caught up on Friday Night Lights except for one episode.  When she went to bed I watched Smallville.  I think Chloe is going to hook up with Davis to keep him from turning into Doomsday and killing Clark, but she’s still married to (though estranged from) Jimmy.  Come on now, Chloe, you’re better than that!

Yeah, that’s really about it.  I don’t even have any musings or insights to go into right now because I’m a little tired.

Anatomy Check

January 22nd, 2009 Zach Dotsey No comments

I started the day with a meeting with a client who has a store not too far from the house.  As we were talking I discovered that he’s having his first kid, a boy, in a couple months!  For a while it seemed that everyone was having girls, but I think it’s starting to even out some.  I stopped by the bank after the meeting and saw Todd Graham.  When I told him that we were having a girl he told me that his son, Nicholas, who has to be about two years old by now, likes younger women.  I told him, as I’ve told anyone having a boy, to make sure he’s a gentleman.

Since the bank is near it, I stopped by Circuit City on the way home.  They had 10% off everything and 20% off music and movies, but honestly their liquidation sale (they announced that all Circuit Cities are closing down last week) didn’t impress me.  I think the company doing their liquidation jacked up the prices then put them on sale.

I got home and worked until 2:30, at which time I left the house to go to the baby doctor.  Every time we’ve gone before I picked Amanda up from work and we drove together, but since it was so late in the day we just drove separate.  We didn’t have to wait long at all, which was nice.

We got to take a long peek at Milly today, as they were doing the anatomy check.  It took even longer because they had a girl doing her ultrasound training there today, which was fine with me- it meant we had longer to watch our baby move around.  Amanda later noted that she was lying down with an arm behind her head, and in the first image we got of Milly, she had an arm behind her head too.  She was moving quite a bit when they first got her to show up.  We saw her moving her mouth and stick her tongue out and I think suck her thumb.  It’s so cool to watch.

In the waiting room, I told Amanda, looking at today’s ultrasound pictures, that Milly had my nose but her eyes.  I looked at the picture again and said that unfortunately it looked like she has her mother’s brain, too.  Amanda hit me.  We than had a short Q&A session with Dr. Vogel and headed on home.  Actually, Amanda went by Michael’s apartment to scan in the ultrasound pics, then she came on home.

I spent a bit of time editing some home movies while Amanda watched some Days of Our Lives and One Tree Hill. Then we swapped places and I watched Smallville while Amanda watched The Bachelor, or the first hour of it anyway, on the computer.  She’d missed it the other night, I think because of the Duke-NC State game.

We watched The Office after that then she went on to bed and I continued to play around with editing some home movies.  I really wish I had some higher-end software for the job.

I got a text message from Nick Warkentien that his sister, Missy, who has cancer, is not doing well.  I’ve been keeping her in my prayers, but I prayed very hard for her and her friends and family tonight.  It’s hard to fathom someone so young going through what she goes through.

Blue Devils and Salukis

November 20th, 2008 Zach Dotsey No comments

Amanda and I went to Seth and Dana Holloman’s to watch the Duke Blue Devils play the Southern Illinois Salukis.  Bad first half, awesome second.  Brian Zoubek continued to improve and Kyle Singler was the star of the game.  Henderson finally came alive in second, played like he should all season.  Nolan Smith’s dunk over two Salukis seemed to kick start the Blue Devil drive.  Gerald Henderson had this one particularly thunderous one handed jam.  Kyle Singler was fouled from behind on a breakaway dunk and slammed into the basketball pole and slid down it.  It looked pretty rough, but he was fine.  The final score was 83-58, Duke.

UCLA ended up losing to Michigan.  I was partly rooting for the Wolverines because I’m just not a big Bruins fan, but as unimpressively as they’ve been playing it would have been nice for Duke to meet them in the Coaches versus Cancer final.  It was the big early season matchup that everyone was looking forward to, but UCLA just couldn’t hold up their end of it.  Duke playing Michigan is even less exciting because they were already on Duke’s schedule anyway.  I guess there will be all kinds of commentary about “the last time these two teams met”.

Gavin, Seth and Dana’s kid, was really cute.  Amanda and I had only met him once before when Seth stopped by the house to pick up some sunglasses he’d left, and the kid was shy at the time, out of his element.  He was pretty entertaining to us tonight though.

Amanda and I watched The Office before she went to bed.  We won’t have any more Office nights with Nick and Amy Warkentien because they now have their small group on Thursday nights.

After Amanda went to bed I caught up on all the Smallville episodes on the DVR.  The next episode is the midseason finale, and the preview for it showed a glimpse of Doomsday.  In the comic books, Doomsday is the creature who (temporarily) killed Superman.

On a side note, lawyers, I have noticed, take forever to get around to giving all the information needed to put the finishing touches on a website.  We finished one up today that was started one year and eight months ago.

Welcome to the World, Addison Jaclyn Sawyer

November 14th, 2008 Zach Dotsey No comments

So it would appear that Andra and Josh Sawyer did not choose Lila for the name of my first niece.  Addison Jaclyn Sawyer was removed from her mother’s womb at about 3:05 PM measuring 21 inches and I think my dad said when he called, eight pounds three ounces.  I didn’t get much other news than that other than the fact that she was healthy, Jackson had been holding her very carefully and their mother was resting.  So welcome to the world, little girl!  I’m sorry I wasn’t there to see you, but I’ll meet you soon.

I just got back inside from hunting for Cobb.  He tends to meow (cry) a lot when he wants something.  Usually it’s food, though now and then it’s his way of telling us that his litter box is a little too full or that the water bowl is empty.  Tonight he seemed to have a bug up his anus about going outside.  So I opened the door and tossed him out.

Even though he was an outside cat, living under our rental house in Sunset Park when we found him, since we’ve moved to our current house he’s always been a bit hesitant about going outside.  Usually he’ll just sit in the doorway until I either bump him with it a bunch or I putt him back inside.  Sometimes he’ll actually venture out, but the slightest noise causes him to run back inside.

I was getting annoyed with his loud and constant crying, so like I said, I tossed him out.  I figured he’d get over being outside pretty quickly, so I left him for a few minutes then came back to let him in.  Only thing was, I couldn’t find him.  I went inside and got a flashlight and eventually found him behind some bushes at the unlit corner of the house.  That’s a good thing, because I was starting to worry that he’d jumped the fence.  Anyway, as soon as I found him he ran back inside.

Other than those two events (the latter really being a non-event), there wasn’t much going on today.  The DVR was about 75% full so Amanda and I watched a few things on that.  She was in bed before 9:30 and I took the opportunity to catch up completely on Smallville.

I think this season is shaping up to be better than the last few.  There isn’t as much mystic mumbo jumbo and they’ve gotten more into the formula of having a different meteor freak every episode like they did back in the early days.  Clark Kent has embraced the role of running around and saving people and they’re building up to having an appearance by Doomsday, which was the creature who famously temporarily killed Superman in the comic books.  That’s next episode, which also features the marriage of Chloe Sullivan and Jimmy Olsen.

Kentucky was defeated, in their season opener at Rupp Arena, by the Virginia Military Institute tonight.  The score was 111-103.  Yeowch.  That’s a pretty embarrassing loss, VMI.  Last year UK lost their second game of the year to Gardner-Webb, which was pretty bad, but losing at home in the first game of the season (which powerhouse teams usually schedule to be pretty easy) is not good.  I’m thinking that even though it’s only his second year there, there are probably a lot of Wildcat fans who are not at all happy with Coach Billy Gillespie.  I also wonder if Patrick Patterson wishes he could go back in time and change is school of choice to Duke.  Last year all Duke really lacked was an inside presence, and I guarantee the Blue Devils would have gone further in the NCAA tournament if he’d gone to the town where I grew up instead of the town where I was born.

Oh, my wetsuit came in today.  Waves should be good tomorrow so I guess I’ll pick it up and get to go ahead and give it a whirl.

Sympathy Symptoms

November 12th, 2008 Zach Dotsey No comments

Work was still a bit busy today, but not as hectic as yesterday.  There are some things I want to do with work that I’m just not getting the time to do.  Hopefully that will change in the near future.

I tried catching up on some Smallville last night but got tired halfway through, so I finished watching that after work while waiting for Amanda to come home.  We scrounged around for some food and watched a couple shows, but she was tired and went to bed by 9:00.  I watched a little more TV, dozing on and off a bit myself.  I’ve been very tired lately myself, which makes me wonder if there is something to those sympathy pains.  Well, not pains in this case, but sympathy symptoms anyway.
